As part of its continuing ‘S.O.S –Save Our Studio’ campaign, Studio Upstairs Bristol announces an exciting open submission exhibition at 204 Gloucester Road artspace from June 27 – July 5 2009.
All artists were given a 6”x 8” postcard and a free rein – the result is a spectacular mixed-media show, with the Bristol art community truly pulling together to show their support for Studio Upstairs.
Postcards have been produced by artists from Aardman, Spike Island, Jamaica Street Studios, PRSC, Mivart Street Studios as well as Studio Upstairs members, managers and volunteers. There has also been a great show of support from Bristol’s street art community, with artists from the hugely successful RWA ‘Crimes of Passion’ exhibition creating pieces, including China Mike, Ponk and Tom Hine.
Deliverance is organised by ex-Studio Upstairs member Teresa Fard in an attempt to give something back and raise much-needed funds - “My personal connection with Studio Upstairs over four years played a big part in the direction of my life,” said Teresa, “It gave me a safe place to develop my art with the support that I needed and helped me to regain my confidence as an Artist. I will always be grateful that this valuable service was available to me and want other people to benefit in the same way.”
The show will be open every day from 10am – 6pm. All postcards will be for sale at just £10 - visitors are advised to come early to get their hands on a bargain!
Despite its funding crisis, Studio Upstairs continues to thrive creatively – a group exhibition at Centrespace is planned in July, as is a fundraising club event at LAB nightclub on July 16th. A successful poetry and music event was staged at the Grant Bradley Gallery in April whilst several generous donations have enabled the Studio to stay afloat and making art. Stephen Williams MP even popped in recently to learn about the work of Studio Upstairs and create a piece of art – a detailed drawing of his own threatened place of work.
