Job Opportunity: Lead Artist for Smudge magazine

RiO and BVAC are seeking an exceptional Lead Artist to act as creative guide to the young editorial team of Smudge magazine.

Smudge is a Bristol-based cultural magazine by and for young people, bringing children in direct contact with the cutting edge of contemporary culture and the people who produce it.

Working in collaboration with creative and cultural organizations in Bristol, the young Editorial Team develop their critical thinking in relation to visual images, media and cultural practice. They develop content and oversee layout and design for 2 magazines a year and a print run of 15,000 copies per issue.

The Lead Artist acts as a critical and creative guide to the editorial team, helping to develop their critical thinking in relation to visual images, media and cultural practice

and leading the vision for each issue of the magazine. They will work closely with the Project Manager to oversee the production of the magazine (including content, layout, design and printing) and ensure that it is delivered on schedule.

If you are a visual artist with demonstrable critical acuity in engaging with visual culture and experience of working creatively with young people, then this is an exciting opportunity to support the creative vision of a growing magazine.

Experience of working on producing publications would also be an advantage.

This contract runs from July – November 2008 in the first instance to cover one issue for a total of 25 days.
