CLEAN - Sarah Cockings and Alice Hodge -were the winners of The Bristol Art Show 2007, resulting in ‘Goldish’, a commissioned exhibition.

CLEAN fund their art practice through domestic cleaning, which also provides inspiration. Their art captures fleeting thoughts, odd ideas and snippets of mundane life that expand into playful meaning and understanding. Their intention is to provide a raw take on life through insightful, sometimes routine, sometimes extraordinary experiences.

For this exhibition, CLEAN are converting Centrespace into two opposing yet dependent spaces. Visitors first enter a traditional gallery containing ‘dirty work’ paintings then leave this conventional set up and progress ‘behind the scenes’ to a store room installation, stocked with a miscellaneous collection of artwork and ephemera. The eclectic variety of work includes paintings in rust, artful taxidermy, renaissance portraits, the Victorian Argos catalogue and remixed antique garden statues.

The aim of this work is to portray grime as gold and vice-versa, using usual materials in unusual ways, to turn what we perceive as beautiful on its head and give status to overshadowed materials.
